A Recap of a Week of Chasing Dreams

I want to take a quick moment to give a recap of the week. I’ve received terrific help, all of which is deeply appreciated. As it stands right now, we’ve raised 5.28% of the goal. I’m continuing to contact various bloggers, share my story, share my goal, and seek their help. However, we must bear in mind that the road from here may get steep. The generous help I’ve received so far has been almost exclusively (with the exception of Beth and the individual donors from Steve and Shaun’s sites) from people I know directly.

Expanding the fundraiser beyond those I know first-hand is going to be a challenge. Can complete strangers be willing to help? I think yes, but they have to know me the way many of you know me–more intimately. I am writing a strong piece now that aims to do just that.

Here’s a quick recap so far:

Orna Ross started things big. (She donated $100)

Ari at Our Best Version kindly put a notice to his readers on his sidebar. (His site has brought $5)

Writer Dad has mentioned me several times now, such as here and even here.

Hayden at Persistent Illusion wrote a very passionate post about helping me.

Beth at Living the Mile-High Life linked to my dream. (Her site has brought $10)

Ian at Indigo Spot shared this event with his audience.

Asrais at Learning to say Yes shared my fundraiser with her audience too.

Eddie at My Film Fest asked his readers for help and helped share my dreams and goals.

Steve Olson at steve-olson.com wrote a stunning message to his audience, and also offered a great opportunity for people get a link for participating. (His site has brought $1)

Shaun at LifeReboot wrote to his readers explaining how a little help from a lot of people will make this a success. (His site has brought $22)

Lyman at Creating a Better Life appealed to his readers for help, and also posted the badge that shows how much has been on his sidebar. (His site has brought $2)

I think it’s interesting that when it comes to money, people you know are much more likely to lend a helping hand than strangers. When it comes to radical life decisions, on the other hand, strangers are more inclined to be supportive than friends and family.

The example I like to use is this: You’re at a party having a conversation with someone you’ve just met. You tell them how you want to race dog sleds in Alaska, or take your garage band to the next level and go on tour, or maybe ride your bike across America…

This stranger will find your idea absolutely fascinating and encourage you to do it, while your family and friends might be more inclined to tell you that you’ll fail trying.

The difference in what strangers and those who are close to you will say or do depending on what you’re after fascinates me.

Anyhow, it looks as though a bunch of bloggers are doing what they can to bring some attention to your C.U.B.E. project, and the ball is rolling. I hope you reach your goal Dereck, good luck!

@ Shaun – Fascinating. You know, you’re right. Some of my friends have been rather pessimistic about it. Because the idea is so unusual, they don’t seem all that interested. And here I’ve found many people on the Internet, you among them, who are extremely supportive.

It could be that they’re pessimistic because the thought of giving up everything–even if just for a few months–is scary.
